This is a severe cold climate band. Steel springs and cables lose tensile flexibility in sustained cold, and lubricants that were fine in a showroom in 1979 turn thick and gummy at the temperatures we get for weeks at a stretch.
That combination - older hardware plus real cold - means the failure curve here doesn't look like the failure curve in a warm-climate suburb with newer construction. A spring rated for 10,000 cycles in a mild climate doesn't get 10,000 cycles here; cold cycling shortens that. Rollers dry out and crack.
